Vision Statement for Reading

At Bunny C of E Primary School, we nurture a lifelong love of reading by inspiring every child to read with fluency, confidence and curiosity. Through exposure to high quality literature and meaningful learning experiences, our pupils develop a deep understanding of texts and the world around them.  We aim for every child to leave our school as an enthusiastic, knowledgeable reader, ready to embrace the next stage of their education.

Reading Scheme / Phonics Scheme

• We implemented Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised SSP as our phonics scheme from Summer Term 2022.
• Children in Reception and Year 1 read fully decodable books closely matched to their phonics knowledge.  These books are published by Big Cat Phonics and designed to be read alongside the Little Wandle SSP.
• Reading books are colour book banded. The reading books connect closely to the phonics knowledge pupils are taught when they are learning to read. Once children are able to decode words fluently (following the Year 1 phonics screening) they access book banded books with guidance from their teacher.  Children also have access to a rich resource of reading for pleasure books to share with an adult or read independently as their reading develops.
