Support for Parents with Reception Children

Writing

Writing is a skill that should be practised daily at home. Here are some ideas to help keep writing fresh and exciting for the children.

Writing for different purposes is key e.g. lists, stories, poems, instructions, cards, letters, fact books, descriptions etc. (Writing should also link to something relatable for the child e.g. something they have done, read, seen or have an interest in e.g dinosaurs)

When we are writing, we need to form our letters correctly, we use the Little Wandle Rhymes and try to structure our sentences correctly.

Use the 'Literacy Knowledge and Skills' document below to help you to work out what areas your child will need to work on next. Each step is divided up into smaller more achievable areas to work on in order to get them ready for the end of Reception and beyond.

In order for your child to 'tick off' an objective, the intention is that they can do that thing 'NICEly'

Naturally (on their own)

Independently (without any adult support or intervention)

Consistently (wasn't just a one off)

Embedded (has demonstrated they really know it well)

Mathematics

Again, the children need to be doing their Mathematics daily. Using the Part Whole Model and 10 Frame to support their visual understanding. White Rose has some fabulous resources on their website to support you deliver this.

They should be able to use their models competently and write addition and subtraction number sentences to match:

(we do not refer to these as sums but as number sentences in order to avoid confusion later down the line)

e.g. 6+4=10

10-6=4

e.g. 2+3=5

5-3=2

Phonics

It is important with Phonics that the children continually revise the sounds and key words that they have already learnt in order to retain the knowledge and apply them within their reading and writing.
